The Company

Situated in the south of Portugal, the Alentejo is highly skilled at producing typical, quality wines. It is overrun by vast vineyards and extensive plains which, under the scalding sun, mature the grapes and characterise the wines of the Alentejo. The winegrowing area of the Alentejo is very important from an economic perspective, being the main source of income of the around 3000 winegrowers to be found in the Alentejo.

The dominant soils in the winegrowing subregions of the Alentejo are of granite origin with some streaks of quartzodiorite schist derivatives. The vine can be found in the poorest soils in the region and is an extreme crop, with the exception of some old vines. The land has shallow slopes and is south-facing. The climate is temperate with Mediterranean and continental characteristics with hot, dry Springs and Summers. Annual rainfall is 500-650 mm, being prevalent mainly in the Winter. Sunshine values are high, particularly in the quarter preceding the harvests, contributing to the perfect maturing of grapes and wine quality.

In fact, these conditions are wholly favourable to the synthesis and accumulation of sugars and the concentration of colourants in the grape berry skin.
