Welcome to the Quinta da PLANSEL winery! We are 100 km east of Lisbon, in Montemor-o-Novo. We are located in the south of the city and have 70 hectares of vineyards which fall within the Évora DO (Designation of Origin). Our historical area features well-preserved late Medieval and early Renaissance architecture. There is evidence here of viticultural activity, including wine production, dating back to Phoenician and Roman times. The Romans used “talhas”, or large amphoras, and this practice has clearly continued to this day in both the production of wine and its storage. The climate is relatively mild with Mediterranean characteristics, although in late summer temperatures can be extreme, sometimes requiring harvesting to be done at night.
There are sharp drops in temperature at night. It is the cooler temperatures at below 18°C because of the vineyard’s proximity to the sea that give our reference grapevine varieties – Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca, – as well as the white varieties their distinctive aroma profile; it is for this very reason that they are harvested in the dark before sunrise. The scenic environment between the vineyards, with its palms, and olive and cork groves which intersperse the rolling hills and plains where cattle graze, gives the estate the aura of a natural parkland, the harmony of which has been incorporated into our winery.
